Art 4 Reflection
Going straight into this class was stressful before I had even started any of the projects because I didn't take Art 3 and I was expecting for this class to be a huge step up from Art 2, I wasn't sure if the work, timeframes or portfolio posts would be more difficult. After being in this class for a week or two maybe even less than that I didn't struggle with any of those aspects except for the timeframes we were given to finish projects and post about it on our Weebly. Going through the class I learned that I need to take more time working on the finer details of the pieces so that they look better at the end but having limited time and wanting to spend more time on smaller parts of the piece was not going to work together, so I couldn't spend more time on it unless I were to stay after school or taking my pieces home.
My first painting in this class was my everyday objects project where I took lifeguard gear and put it in the ocean with sharks, I liked this idea because I liked the irony of something comforting around something scary. Bringing together the two aspects of safety and danger contrasted so well together and I also used a bright red for the gear and darker and cooler colors for the sharks and water around them. While working on this piece I think that I really used my time well and got it done efficiently. This piece came out to be one of the best ones that I made in this class. The way I painting smoky looking things like the blood coming out of the foreground sharks mouth was something I have never done yet it is a very successful part of the piece.

This shark piece along with several others really show how as an artist I have grown and advanced through showing quality and detail. I have gotten good at just being able to look at a picture and copy it down on paper which has made me better at making more realistic and accurate pieces. It seems like drawing cartoon characters from TV shows is almost as easy as drawing a straight line now. When you spend so much time working on pieces that have so much detail working with sketches or doodles with little to no detail other than a simple outline begins to be so easy. Two years ago when I was a freshman I attempted to draw the characters from Family Guy and they didn't turn out to look anything like them so I decided to just stay away from drawing cartoons but recently I had gotten alcohol markers and wanted to practice them on some simple shapes so I started to draw characters from Rick and Morty, I thought that it looked so good I just kept going and made an entire page of a scene made on a poster I have.
Looking at different pieces I've done in different styles and color schemes that I have used in them shows me the progress I've made just in the years I've been in high school.
Both of these pieces are of something in nature the watercolor piece on the left is from this year and the one on the right is a charcoal and chalk piece from two years ago of a fake flower. Starting off the water color piece has so much more texture and value than the charcoal piece. When I was drawing the charcoal piece I was not focusing on texture nor was I thinking about value, the general shape of it is correct but while I was drawing the pedals I was only drawing random shapes that I thought might look like real pedal which I guess It did in the end but if you were to study it and look at them each individually you would see that they are very unnatural shapes that don't belong.

This class has pushed me in and out of my comfort zone so much that I am not afraid to try new things. I have never failed in this class even though there has been pieces that I could have done better on there has always been success one way or another, doing to class critiques have helped me realize this no matter how garbage you think your piece is there's always someone who finds something good about your piece. This is really encouraging because its really hard to keep working on a piece that you don't like.
